How to Download YouTube Subtitles When YouTube Has No Download Option
YouTube’s player has no native “Download captions” option. The closest built-in feature is “Show transcript,” which exposes the text inline but not as a file. To get an actual file, you need a third-party tool. This guide covers the workaround.
For the underlying download workflow, see our complete guide.
The state of YouTube’s download options
As of 2026, YouTube doesn’t offer any of the following natively:
- A “Download captions” button on the player
- A way to export a transcript from YouTube Studio
- An API endpoint for downloading captions from a public video
This is a known gap. The community has filled it with third-party tools.
The workaround
- Open YouTube Caption Downloader.
- Paste the YouTube URL.
- Pick a subtitle track.
- Save as SRT, VTT, or TXT.
The tool reads YouTube’s caption data and saves it as a file in your chosen format. Total time: under a minute.
Why YouTube’s built-in features don’t solve this
| Built-in feature | What it does | What it doesn’t do |
|---|---|---|
| Show transcript button | Shows text inline | No file output, no timing |
| YouTube Studio (for your own videos) | Edit and replace captions | No bulk export |
| YouTube Data API (for owners) | Programmatic access | No public video access for non-owners |
A third-party downloader is the practical answer for getting caption files from any video you have the URL to.
Format choice
| Format | Best for |
|---|---|
| SRT | Video editing |
| VTT | HTML5 <video> embedding |
| TXT | Reading, copy/paste |
